Sam Easter answers all your Make-up related questions

Going round in circles?

Q. I suffer from very dark circles under my eyes and I'd love to get rid of them in time for my big day. How can I cover them up and what are the best products to use?

A. Sam Easter says: Dark under eye circles have many causes. They can be hereditary, allergy or sun-related, hormonal, or maybe you're just really tired. Whatever the cause, and however often you're afflicted with dark circles, you want to disguise them for your big day.
One way to do this is to apply a concealer specifically formulated for dark circles. One of my favourites is Bobbi Brown's Corrector, which is great for very dark pigmentation. If the circles under your eyes tend to be very purple, use concealer with a yellowish tone; if the under eye circles are blue, get a concealer that is more orange based.
Reddish circles? Grab an olive-based concealer and for circles with brown tones, try products with a blue or mauve tint.
After application, powder under your eyes with a very fine translucent powder to set the corrective concealer, and then go over the area one more time with your regular concealer, followed by your foundation.

Perfect pout

Q. I've heard you should accentuate either your lips or your eyes. I normally wear eye make-up, but on my wedding day I'd like to have a strong colour on my lips to match my '50s retro theme. I am fair-skinned with blonde hair, and I don't want to look vampy. What shade would suit me best, and how can I make it last all day?

A. Sam Easter says: That's very true, the general rule for bridal make-up is either accentuate your eyes or lips. Make-up inspired by the '50s can bring a very sophisticated and glamorous wedding day look, as this decade stood out for its sophisticated image of femininity.
A flawless complexion is the key, with immaculate semi-matte skin and as natural a look as possible. For retro lips, use strong colours with red tones such as raspberry or Bordeaux. Don't forget to apply lip liner to keep the lipstick from smearing. This season's tones are dramatic and very defined so your stroke must be perfect. The shape you give is up to you, but a cupid's bow will make your lips look very sensual.

Should I wear more make-up than usual?

Q. I'm not used to wearing very much make-up, I generally just wear mascara and a bit of blusher. My friend has said I should really wear a bit more on my wedding day - especially for the photos - but I don't want it to look or feel heavy. How can I create a natural look and keep the make-up to a minimum?

A. Sam Easter says: This is a very common concern for brides-to-be. Your friend is right, you should wear make-up for your wedding day, but this doesn't mean you have to wear a lot. The aim is to look beautiful and flawless so that you can be proud of your photos for years to come.
Bridal make-up should help transform you into a vision of radiance. Your foundation should look and feel like a second skin, so only choose shades that complement your skin tone. Remember your eyes are the key to your soul and the main focal point in photos, so make sure their shape is defined. Lastly, create fresh-looking cheeks followed by a natural lip colour. Follow these easy steps and you're sure to look and feel confident on the day.

Q. I really like the '60s-style pale lip look. Is this too high maintenance for a wedding day, or is there a way of creating this look that doesn't need touching-up every few minutes?

A. Sam Easter says: A little trick to cut down on maintenance is to dab some of your foundation or concealer across your entire lip area before you apply any nude lipliners, lipglosses or lipsticks. This will knock back the natural colour of your lips and help with staying power. It also provides a nice canvas to start with.
As a rule, head for nudes with pink or apricot tones, as opposed to flat beiges, as they're more natural-looking and therefore far more flattering, helping not to wash your smile away in the photos. To complement pale lips, always pair with smouldering, soft smoky eyes.

How can I get rid of my bags?

Q. I suffer from dark circles under my eyes. Is there anything I can do to disguise them on my wedding day?

A. Sam Easter says: This is a frequent concern for many brides-to-be. To hide dark circles, you must use a concealer or corrector underneath your foundation and make sure it is blended well. Choose a concealer with a yellow or peach undertone to neutralise the blue-green tone of the circles. Finish the area with a dusting of translucent powder.

Staying power

Q. My eye make-up always fades within a few hours. Is there a way to make it last longer for my wedding day?

A. Sam Easter says: When your eyeliner and eyeshadow make an early exit, you can usually blame excess oils in your skin. To prevent this happening, use an oil-free primer on your eyelids, followed by a foundation. Next apply a cream shadow over the entire lid and let it set for a few moments, then layer on a powder eyeshadow in the same tone, followed by your contour colours. Cream eyeshadow has staying power because it absorbs into the skin, and powder shadow soaks up excess oil. Also, try using a waterproof eyeliner pencil to increase longevity.
